This piece I believe is a portion of an antique Middle Eastern camel saddle bag, which, as may be obvious, would have been used for traveling on camelback. Quite heavy for its size, this is truly an exquisitely woven piece, made with a wool weft on a cotton warp. The colors are vivid and the design I think just beautiful, with triangles comprised of triangles and diamonds of diamonds. The reverse side, which tells the story of its making, is pretty amazing too.
I would hang this piece on the wall where I could admire it everyday. It measures approximately 25” long x 10 1/2” wide. While the weaving itself is in terrific shape, this piece clearly shows its history, which I believe adds to its appeal as a truly remarkable object.
