Antique School Slate with Carved Initials and Wrapped Corners

Regular price $65.00

What most draws me to antique school slates are the histories they carry, especially things like initials carved in the frames and old make-do repairs, both of which this one special. Usually the mends take the form of corners reinforced with metal strips and extra nails, but this is the first I've come across repaired with string, brilliantly wrapped tight between notches carved into the sides of the frame, and still holding tight. I think perhaps it was carved wooden nails rather than iron ones that once held the corners together, now gone entirely. And then E.E.D carved into the top of the frame on one side. Love.

13 3/4" x 9 3/4" x 9/16" and very usable still should one want to put it to use, with a hole at the top for hanging. Stable and sturdy with the slate itself in very good shape.
