This early 20th century ink drawing of a woman in her tennis playing outfit looking poised for a match just makes me happy, making me think of tennis, and sport more generally, as (in some ways at least) a realm of freedom and liberation. And, indeed, over the course of the past century plus, tennis has provided a field for that (literally) perhaps more than any other sport. And so I, who likes to map meaning onto everything, see, in this serene but serious looking woman with racquet in hand, an icon! And I love her.
10 1/2 x 7 7/8 and in very good condition. Ink on paper, with another little drawing on reverse.
