I always have an eye out for old retablos, but the old ones I really love are usually super pricey. I was thrilled to find this one then, which I believe is likely late 19th or early 20th century, and both a classic and super beautiful one I think. The text that once ran along the bottom, surely telling the story of this woman's miraculous healing, is either long ago faded away or painted over, which I believe only makes it better, placing all emphasis on the delicacy and grace of the small painting and its wonderful details, including that fantastic pure pattern of the rug beside her bed, the striped trim of her blanket, the tassels hanging from the curtains, and those beautiful thorns, stigmata, and trails of blood. Really nice, and beautifully aged.
6 3/4" x 4 5/8", oil on tin. A few light scratches, as pictured. There is a hole at top center for a small nail.
