One of two stone carved books this week, which just between the two of them made this a good week, as I do really love a stone carved book--or a book-shaped anything-- and good ones don't cross my path all that often. This one is gray stone with white marbling, nicely carved with three raised bands on the spine and an etched cross with border detailing on both front and back. Plus old gold paint on the pages and as highlights on the spine. Of substantial scale and weight and so a certain gravitas--feels pretty holy to me!
3 9/16 x 2 1/2 x 1 3/16 and in very good condition, with no notable chips or cracks or. Late 19th/early 20th c. I believe.
