As you likely know by now I have a penchant for things with a certain awkwardness about them--which I find to be marvelously the case with this antique carving of Santo Nino (baby Jesus), whose head is very large in proportion to the rest of his body, and who looks as much like an old man (or woman) as a child to me, though admittedly this is often the case. Clearly, he has also lost an arm, which perhaps held a scepter, but he still has his orb in other (looking as if he might be about to bowl with it), some red paint and gold leaf still on his robe, and very little loss the the paint on his face, though it seems quite possible those eye brows and lashes and lips were enhanced along the way! It's a bit hard to tell but it looks to me the eyes may be small inlaid pieces of glass with the pupils painted on top. Wonderful carving of the hair, contrasting with the cruder carving of the lower body. Love.
10 1/8" t x 5 1/4" w. Loss of one arm as evident and paint loss on the body but very sound and sturdy and stands steady on his own two feet.
