I've had a couple of snuff boxes with puzzle type lids like this one, which take a few steps to unlock and open, making whatever is held inside feel all the more precious! I am pretty certain the knobs and inlaid details on this one are carved of ivory, and it seems more likely than not sailor made, though I am not certain, nor am I 100% sure of the hardwood, which is dark, smooth, and really lovely. The interior of the box is lined in crimson red paper.
3 1/4" l x 1 11/16" w x 1" tall. Some wear to the paper on the interior but overall really excellent condition. Late-ish 19th century or so I would think.
