C. 1850s Native American Finely Beaded Wool Pouch, Seneca or Wabanaki

Regular price $200.00

This is an early one, mid 19th century I believe, glass beads on red wool ground, with green silk border and light blue interior, polished cotton I believe. There was a great deal of similarity between Wabanaki (especially Mi'kmaq) and Iroquois (specifically Seneca) beadwork during this period; I am not expert enough to attribute definitively. (There is an excellent blog devoted to just this: https://iroquoisbeadwork.blogspot.com/) I am forever swooning at examples like this, which I see on occasion at shows around New England and are much prized; this one I went to Pennsylvania to find, and shows some losses, particularly to the red ground (no surprise, it being wool), but remains a beautiful and very special thing.

4 1/2" x 4 7/8". Small scattered holes in the red wool ground as evident. Some bead loss on the opening side as pictured, largely to white beaded border just inside the green silk, and to beading along the flap closure. Clasp detached, but saved, inside pouch). Stable sound but one wants to handle with care.
