JOHN SNIVELEY JR. You know I love language, and names of people that evoke strong associations, and also labor-full objects that evince a sense of their maker's hard-trying effort and pride (and no small feat to carve one's name in backward letters!)...so how could I not feel responsible for looking after Mr. Sniveley Jr??? Plus I really love the use of colons here, and the way the JR was sort of crunched in at the end. And the old red paint on it, which is better in hand than photos convey. (I've shot in a couple of different lighting situations, and standing up as well as laid down flat to try to give a decent sense of this.) 19th century, and I believe earlier than later, probably used for stamping grain sacks/seed bags or similar.
9 1/4" x 2 3/4" x 7/8". Very good condition, terrific patina and old red painted surface, wonderfully irregular in form, terrific objecthood and presence.
