Calender, 1856, Dramatically Inked Fraktur Bookplate

Regular price $45.00

I'm very tempted to get this one in a simple frame and keep it for myself forever--possessing a drama and gravitas that far exceeds it scale, and feeling as if it holds all of the weight of time and its passage in those very heavily black inked letters, which have burned through the paper here and there. The bookplate of a Christina Kern, 1856, found in Pennsylvania.(Love that lonely comma after the 1856, too.) And note the spelling of Calender with an e--a sort of hybrid of the German Kalender and English Calendar.

6 3/16 x 4". Ink has burned through the paper here and there as evident, but the paper is not brittle. One wants to handle it by the edges but it is stable.
