One Armed But Very Beautiful 19th Century Wood and Tin Articulated Figure

Regular price $175.00

There is a delicacy and certain sort of refinement about this one that doesn't really come across in photos--he's primitive, but he's also elegant (even while missing an arm) and really feels almost dainty. Made as a jig figure, with a small hole in his back for inserting a thin dowel, c. 1870s or so I believe, and with some lithographed paper still on one arm that looks as if carved from an early box of children's blocks or toys. His head was carved from a separate piece of wood (perhaps a bedpost?) and again, his features feel more fine in hand. And I find his construction especially beautiful, with cut pieces of tin used for carefully joining his legs to his torso, and at his knees. All feels very tender, and a wonderful rich dry patina to the pine to boot.

8 1/2" t x 1 3/4" w. Missing one arm but otherwise in good condition, all joints moving as they should, not fragile, very rich and beautiful patina to the dry wood. He does not sit op on his own, so needs to lean against something, or also could be hung with the hole in his back resting on a nail.
