Much Loved Sweetly Frowning Antique Jointed Man with Tenderly Added Legs

Regular price $165.00

This frowning fellow is one of a number of wonderful old carved articulated figures today, him straight out of an amazing West Coast collection of folk/self-taught/outsider art.  For me carved figures like are as close to animate as a handmade thing can be, and I always love the process of photographing them--a sort of "getting to know you" experience, through which their very individual personalities (and souls, I would say!) reveal themselves, including through discovering how they are able to bend, move, sit, etc. This one (with great wing-like shoulders) never had arms, but he did gain a new set of legs at some point along the way--nicely done, with wire joints and booted feet, and carved a good while ago it appears, as they've acquired a nice dry patina too. Best though is his carved face, animated with what look to me like traces of old white paint. No hole in his back for a dowel, and he really has much more the feel of an antique bedpost doll to me.

8 3/4" t x 2" x 1" d. Good condition, sturdy and sound, legs added/replaced at some point. He will sit up on his own in a split or resting on his his heels as shown, or sits well atop a block.
