Beautifully Constructed Antique Ash Splint Basket with Carved Wooden Handle

Regular price $150.00

I believe this basket dates to the late 19th century and was made in New England—and it is a beauty of its type, in very good, sturdy condition. With its original naturally aged dry patina, it features a hand carved wooden handle, notched at the lip of the basket to fit between two bentwood bands, the outer one overlapping, and terminates in points where it ends midway down the sides of the basket. Nice old iron nails around the top, and two wider splints interrupting thinner ones to add variation to the woven basket. I especially love how the splints were turned over the top edge and woven back down such that their pointed ends are visible on the exterior. Really lovely.

14 3/4” x 10 3/8” x 11” t. Very good and very sound condition. There is one clean break to one splint on the bottom of the basket—not noticeable looking down into the interior.
