I love this photograph so much, found in upstate New York, but I think taken in Italy--handwritten on the reverse side of the backing cardboard (which I opened the frame up to discover, then flipped it over to show on the outside) is Stresa, Italy, 1968 (I can't guarantee that note refers to this image, and perhaps that is the year it was purchased rather than the year it was taken, but there it is). Quite a cast of characters whatever the case, with the two young men in black tank tops at center seeming perhaps in training--surely someday soon to graduate to white shirts! I love an occupational photo, especially one in which the subjects are actively engaged in their trade--and quite a perfect array of barber shop tasks represented down the line here. Wonderful faces, wonderful gestures, just great.
Photo: 10" x8" glossy photo, framed as found: 12 3/4" x 9 5/8", both in good vintage condition. I cleaned to the glass but otherwise left just as is; the photo is not mounted to any backing, just floating against a piece of old white card, held tight by the backing. Some spotting to the white card, easily replaced, but I didn't want to mess with the casualness of it all which I really like, and the whole thing has a great presence.
