I purchased this and a second watercolor by the same person at Brimfield, then immediately liberated them from old mats and frames upon returning home in order to really see them; they needed to see the light of day--and the colors in this one are especially fantastic. (All they need now is to float against white in a very simple, clean, white or black frame.) The other is signed, twice--Tshi Mua and Tshibanda Muayabu, I believe most likely Congolese, and presuming so my guess is painted toward the tail end of Belgian occupation (1950s) or just after. I love the many small moments captured here, portraying the simultaneous lives of many women--and their different circumstances in the process, from the black women working the fields in the foreground to the light skinned woman in red dress on her bicycle, to the young boaters on the river. And then the lone goat. This and the other feel like portraits of life continuing on amid ever-changing circumstances, and finding beauty where it lies.
11 3/4" x 9 1/2" and in good condition, watercolor on paper. Looking closely, one can find a signature just below the feet of the woman in red in the field at near left.
