A wonderful and very expressive carved figure I think, who I take for a man of the woods in many senses! There’s quite a primitive elegance to him I think, and a bit of surface splitting that makes it appear even as if he’s got a cloak drawn around him--which to me makes also makes him feel a bit French! (From one angle, with face in profile, he actually reminds me a bit of Punch from Punch and Judy, and also a bit of Napolean!) Fantastic dry wood patina, good all the way around, and with a super warm presence — better in person and really quite fabulous!
5 3/4" t x 2 1/4" x 1 5/8" and in very good condition. Early-ish 20th century I believe and signed in pencil on the underside.
