Wonderful OId Folk Art Ashray with Carved Recess for Pipe

Regular price $140.00

The latest--and I think greatest--find reflecting my predilection for representations of pipes, which always feel Magritte-ian to me, and Duchampian too. This wonderful thing I know from the seller was found in New England and obviously all carved from one piece of wood (hardwood, or possibly a tropical wood) and I believe likely dates to about 1900 or so. In addition to being wonderfully primitive, to me it speaks all about absence and also anticipation--of the specific pipe that once lay there (and was dumped into the bowl) and of the one it now awaits, perhaps forever. I'd be inclined to hang this one the wall as it reads just beautifully like a complete work of art.

6 7/8" x 6 1/2" x 1 7/8" and in very good antique condition.
