Quite a amazing figure this indigenous woman cuts, between her two hats stacked tall, the wonderful mix of fabrics and garments and patterns covering her body, and most of all her striking, proud, life- and desert-weathered looking face, several front teeth missing. The hand-written note on reverse names her as Maggie Ball and describes her shrewdness in finding things for nothing, which sounds like resourcefulness to me! It also notes that on the day this was taken "a detail of girls were cleaning out the quarters of an employee who had left," making me think the taker of the photo was stationed in the desert, perhaps military?
