I probably look at 100 antique slates for every one that I buy, and this is among the most beautiful I've ever found. The frame is walnut I believe, gorgeous rich color and the surface worn super smooth, with beautiful old metal wrap mends to each of the corners. Plus monograms carved deeply into each long end on one side, and long grooves on the other side. So much better in hand; really all about its objecthood, and nice and heavy and very sturdy. With holes in the wood for hanging both vertically and horizontall.
10 1/2" x 7 1/2" x 3/8" and in beautiful antique condition, 19th century and I believe earlier than later. Found in Maine.
