I've bought and sold a lot of carved whimsies, including chains, such that it now takes a pretty special or unusual one to excite me. And this is one of those, very much the product of one particular person's fancies! There is a piece of fishing line threaded through the rounded "cage" at top by which to hang it, which is what it was clearly carved to do (though I like it arranged on a tabletop too.) Photos give a good sense, but in case not evident there is a sort of carved bolt that extends from one of the architectural cages to the next, allowing the lower one to rotate 360 degrees. And there is a carved ball inside that top spherical cage. Terrific patina to the dry wood surface, some sort of pine I believe. Really an unusual one.
25 1/4" long x approx 1 3/4" wide and deep. Overall very good condition, earlyish 20th century I believe. One small loss to the bottom edge of the small form between the chain links and the larger carved forms--as documented in second to last image. Minor.
