Treasure Trove of a 1879-80 Monticello, Iowa Drawing and Watercolor Book, with Loose Drawings Too

Regular price $375.00

This "drawing book" (as handwritten on the cover) is filled with many many delights large and small--I've done a fairly comprehensive job photographing it, though I don't think my photos do it any justice. It dates to 1879-1880, with Monticello, Iowa noted in the pages many times, along with the names Alfred B. Tucker, and Ida Black; Ida I believe was responsible for the bulk of the work, but it does seem there are contributions from two different hands (I found an Alfred B Tucker of Monticello born in  1855; my guess is that he was Ida's drawing instructor, with most of the work done by her, but insertions here and there by him--some very precise ink sketches for example....) Whatever the case, quite a trove of delights here, with the right hand pages divided into quadrants, and then quarters again, yielding lots of small sketches and some fancy lettering, some completely wonderful--and then the left hand pages mostly devoted to full page graphite or watercolor drawings--portraits, scenes, some really lovely florals, and a a couple of ink spatter silhouette works too. And then a good handful of loose drawings and watercolors too, tucked into the pages, which seemed to me good to keep together with it, having travelled some 145 years together already. Altogether quite a thing, with many many pages frame worthy should one be disposed, though it is really a joy to sit with as a whole in hand.

11 1/2" x 9". 37 leafs mostly at least partially filled (all pages with drawings documented) + 2 full loose pages and assorted small loose drawings/watercolors--all in good shape and all as documented. Plenty of wear to exterior and spine.
