Thou God Seest Me, 19th C.Sunderland Lustre Painted Transferware Plaque with All Seeing Eye

Regular price $175.00

I come across 19th c Sunderland lustreware/ transferware plaques along the lines of this one occasionally, and always covet them, but it is the all seeing eye at top that really sold me on this one. And it is in mint condition, to boot. I'm not religious in the least, but do love phrases like this, which comes from the Bible, Genesis 16:13, in which Hagar (an Egyptian servant girl) says it to God after he meets her in distress--which I choose to interpret as meaning all creatures (including inanimate ones!) are deserving of love and recognition!

9 3/8" x 8 1/2". With two holes for threading a ribbon or wire through to hang. Excellent condition. C. 1860s I believe. (There is a whole website devoted to Sunderland with a full survey of these in particular--more here.)
