The Life of Little Witenose! How ever could I resist? I could devote my life to hunting tiny hand-drawn books like this--and this is an early one, 1854.A note accompanying it attributes it to a young Hattie Burleigh Janes--if only I had all of the content of that box! (I bought this from a New England dealer who had it in her personal collection for 30 or so years and just pulled it out.) Photos show every page, which can be a bit of a challenge to decipher but with a little effort one learns that Witnose was a little and knowing and pretty cat, who would sit up straight at tea time, and who yeld in the field from a tree and was picked up by Hattie and jumpd down and came after her and hid and mewed and found her and she took him! And then Hattie shows us the cider mill and tells us how bad she felt when Witneose went away when he was 2 years old and was sick in three or four days and seems to have disappeared: "Oh how I wish I had Witenose now." With very wondering drawings paying great homage to dear Witenose. Total love.
