I purchased this and a second watercolor by the same person at Brimfield, them immediately liberated them from old mats and frames upon returning home in order to really see them; they needed to see the light of day! (All they need now is to float against white in a very simple, clean, white or black frame.) This one is signed, twice-- Tshi Mua and Tshibanda Muayabu--I believe most likely Congolese, and if so my guess is painted toward the tail end of Belgian occupation (1950s) or just after-- the inclusion of armed soldiers in black at left provides no definitive clue, but don't think very much later than that. With great green Toyota truck carrying what I take for a crew of workers, the road bordered by flames of grass, and marvelously colorful trees all around. This and the other feel like portraits of life continuing on amid ever-changing circumstances, and finding beauty where it lies.
11 3/4" x 9 1/2" and in good condition, watercolor on paper. A few stains and a little toning visible around the border.
