This carved folk art head feels to me very serene; if he were he to have a body, I believe he would be sitting cross legged on the floor! He also has a bit of the aspect of an alien, as in from outer space. (And if you happen to follow the Celtics, doesn't he look a little like Derric White, ha!?) I really don't know much other than he came to me from the collection of Joey Lin, Anonymous Works, and that he surprises me every time I look at him--somehow shifting aspect from every angle and dependent on the light, so feeling forever a bit elusive. The head was carved from three pieces (vertical layers) of wood, as shown, with the carved ears applied, attached by nail, and the head screwed to the black painted custom base from the underside. Mmid 20th century or so I would think, with a warm patina to the dry wood and substantial presence.
8 3/4" t (head itself 7 1/4" t) x 4 7/8" w x 2 1/4" d.Very good condition, with a a little darkening to the surface of the wood under the left eye and at the center to the nose, and a small hole in the surface of the firehead - like a bindi!
