A gorgeous albumen photo CDV, very tonally rich and capturing every detail with clarity, down to every spatter and splatter covering the floor! And what a trio of faces, among which this goat is clearly the star--having been milked just before the photo was taken, with the man holding a jar full. Feels very Italian indeed, taken by Giorgio Conrad, Napoli, printed on reverse, c. 1860s.
Conrad (1827-1889)--examples of whose carte de visite (some hand-colored, and especially occupationally related) are included in major museum collections--helped to spur what the Met describes as a veritable 'cartomania' in Italy in the 1860s. He was born in Switzerland (1827) and active in Naples beginning in the late 1850s.
3 15/16" x 2 5/8", very good condition, with some light general toning spots, minor and not detracting.
