Painterly Old Oil on Canvas Springtime Painting

Regular price $55.00

This looks like the first of the flowering trees in early spring to me, which always feels like a bit of a miracle, and a most welcome one. I found this not far from me on the North Shore in Massachusetts, I would guess not too far from where is was painted. The wooden stretcher shows what looks to be a patent date of Oct 7, 1884, so I would think done not too long after that. Impressionistic and atmospheric, it's a good one for a salon style wall or tight spot, and the almost electric spring green gives it some punch.

On the back of the stretcher is written Stanwood, which could be listed painter Franklin Stanwood, of Maine, 1852-1888.

11 1/4" x 8 3/8" and in good condition, as found. Looks like it was once framed as it is a little lighter around the edges. There is one nail sticking up at the center top, which was driven through and up the wooden stretcher and with some effort could be removed, which I'll try to do before shipping!
