Old Ship in a (Large) Bottle Sailor's Whimsy

Regular price $70.00

This old ship in a bottle whimsy has accumulated a good amount of dust and dirt inside over the years, and I think it's seen a lot of years! It's a cool one though, with silver painted hand-carved stopper with cross-bar inside, which I've learned it what distinguishes true folk art bottle whimsies from more common ones. The carved hull of the boat inside was painted silver as well, and while the yards of the three masts are pretty tilted, they all seem full in tact. Plenty of bubbles in the bottle glass, which I believe, based on the mark on the bottom, was made by Illinois Glass, sometime between 1915-1929.

10" long x 3" tall x 2 1/4" wide. The boat is not attached to the bottom, so moves around freely inside when the bottle is moved. The stopper turns 360 degrees. As noted, this piece shows it age with plenty of dust inside and one the interior walls of the bottle, but still quite a wonderful thing I think.
