My friend and fellow dealer Kevin Duffy, Candler Arts, posted a photo of this painting from the fields of Brimfield, which made me love it, and want it. I then came across in person it later that day, which sealed the deal. And I learned that someone else had purchased the frame it was in, leaving it behind, which of course heightened my commitment to what I already found a highly empathetic portrait. I presume an older trans woman, perhaps just coming into her own, though I'm not inclined to make assumptions; it is all about this face, and carefully painted paisley shirt, and Mr. Rogers cardigan for me. Feels honest and hopeful and vulnerable and proud--my favorite combination of attributes. And curious how the brown of the background continues around the arms and to the bottom, as if the subject were not quite fully formed.
