Much Loved 19th Century Cricket Stool in Early Calicos

Regular price $175.00

I've definitely developed a thing for early calicos--the blue of those indigos does it for me every time, and even more so when paired with red--and of course my love of cricket stools is never ending, so no way could I resist this one. The stool is earlyish 19th century I believe, and the fabric has clearly been on it a very long time, it looks to me likely once with another layer of trim that wrapped around the lower perimeter and was nailed onto the underside, with most of the nails still there. The red plaid (which I believe is silk) stretched across the top shows not quite horizontal lines of stitching, attaching it to the cotton batting underneath, with a very visually satisfying effect. That fabric is well worn (and I’d guess had a first life as a dress or petticoat before becoming a stool covering)--threadbare in places as evident, and showing stains, but stable and really not fragile. I find the whole combination of color and pattern, wear and losses and mends, hard and soft--many layers of history--all very beautiful.

12 1/8" x 7" x 7 1/2" t, Stable and sound, not shedding, not especially fragile. Perhaps more for the tabletop or top of the stool tower than for resting one's feet, though it's so inviting and cozy feeling I might use for the latter!
