This one is all about atmosphere, and attitude, for me. I love portraits of people and their dogs, and quite a pair these two, with this fellow looking rather renegade to me. I find the gesture of the dog's raised and turned head the hinge of the whole image: turned as if to register the man's expression--and to have an eye on the position of his gun!--while also exposing neck and chest in what feels like a vulnerable way.
10" x 6 3/8". Paper print, heavy matte paper, a bit grainy, c. 1920s-30s I believe, with a couple of tears coming in from the edges, visible from reverse and feeling all of a piece with it.
