I know from collector in whose amazing collection of folk and outsider art this carving lived in for many years that it was made as a handle for a knife, and one can tell that his head served as a good grip! African American, earlier 20th century, I believe--he looks a bit Harlem Renaissance era to me. With large ears to take in everything around him, and highly arching eyebrows that suggest he might be hearing to a tall tale, and perhaps preparing to take action!
8" tall on stand, as shown. 5 1/2" alone x 1: w x 1 1/2" d. Very good condition, custom stand included. A couple of dark stains to the surface of the wood on one side, I think not at all detracting. Looks like oak to me.
