I've found a few pieces of Shipibo pottery over the years and always kept an eye out for them. This pottery is created by women of Shipibo tribe of the Peruvian Amazon; as I understand it, the maze-like hand-painted designs are sophisticated interpretations of their cosmic beliefs, including that the flow of the jungle rivers follow the same course as the stars. One does not see Shipibo pottery dating to earlier than the 20th century; I believe this is earlier than later 20th c., which would be considered an older piece. Coil built earthenware with polychrome.
4 7/16" d x 3" t. One small chip to the interior of the lip --visible when viewed from the opposite side looking down but fairly minor; otherwise some roughness around the lip; overall good condition with a nice patina.
