One of my favorite July Brimfield finds, from a dealer who always has wonderful and unusual things. (I also bought a ship in a "bottle" with the bottle actually a hollowed out lightbulb.) Quite a delicately carved nude, and I really love the ambiguity of it--I believe she is actually meant to be lying down, as if her head resting on a pillow (and with her right breast pulled by gravity in that direction, but then I think the carver was quite attached to the front view too, and she seems more inclined to be displayed vertically than horizontally. The effect thus becomes of a woman turning slightly and seeming to deliberately conceal her face.
5 7/8" x 3 1/2" and in very good condition, stained and lightly varnished.
