Ladies Be Free... c. 1850 Thomas Fell & Co. Child's Cup and Saucer

Regular price $65.00

Of course it's the "Ladies All I Pray Make Free" that sold me on this child's sized antique transferware cup and saucer, made, I've learned, by Thomas Fell & Co., Newcastle England, c. 1850 as per one of the same, in black, held in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum. There's a bit of debate out there as to whether this should be classified as an early women's suffrage item; I think most likely it was not actually intended as such, but the implications are good enough for me! And, of course, I'm a sucker for early transferware incorporating text of all sorts. Plus, a sweet little teapot at the center of the cup. Lovely.

Cup measures 1 7/8" t x 2 9/16" in diameter, 3 1/4" across at handle. Saucer measures 4 5/8" in diameter. Very good condition, no chips or notable cracks, just a little glaze loss around the lip. A bit of smudging to the transfer, original to it.
