I just love this image, which also feel quite timely--what describes our moment better than a picture of a smuggler making exaggerated gestures in claim of innocence? This engraving dates to 1777 and pictures English comic actor John Quick in drag playing the character of Alderman Smuggler in George Farquhar's The Constant Couple. Copperplate engraving by J. 8" x 5" as mounted to backing paper, with red ink drawn border. Very good condition, general light toning/spotting more pronounced in photos than in hand.
