Jean de la Fontaine Selected Fables Illustrated by Alexander Calder, 1957

Regular price $55.00

I was just saw a beautiful Alexander Calder show at Moma and have had Calder on the brain, so was delighted to find this one this weekend, which I think is pure joy. Jean de La Fontaine (1621-95) collected fables from a wide variety of sources, both Western and Eastern, and adapted them into French free verse, publishing these in several volumes from 1668 to 1694, which became classics of French literature. For this book published by George Brazilier, Inc, NY, a selection of those wonderful fables were translated into English by Eunice Clark, and a series of drawings created by Calder to accompany them.

I believe this 1957 copy is a second edition; copyright is 1948. 12 1/4" x 8 3/8" x 11/16; 88 pages, hardcover. Paper dustcover shows age and wear, with some tearing along the spine; book itself is in very good, clean condition, with beautiful heavyweight rag paper pages. Wonderful drawings throughout.
