Ice House at Coes Pond, Perfectly Naive 1889 Watercolor Drawing

Regular price $45.00

The richness of the palette really makes this old drawing/painting for me--the ochres of the road, rendered with painterly dashes, and the whole spectrum of reds and brows and greens. Quite lovely, and feels very warm toward this place - described as the Ice House at Coes Pond along the bottom, which a little research tells me places it near Worcester, MA. In those days--1889 here--ice was harvested from ponds in the winter, a labor performed by dozens of men and horses, then stored in ice houses located along the banks. I might guess that the HH who signed this was quite familiar with the ice harvest, and the importance of this particularly ice house to the life of community around it.

9 7/8" x 7 3/8" and in good overall condition, with some toning/staining at the corners, small paper loss to lower left corner, and a few other small scattered stains and edge tears, all of a piece with it.
