On one hand I'm sad to see much of the beautiful penmanship in this 1836 notebook covered up, but on the other hand I love its having been repurposed as a scrapbook a few years later--including for how that reminds use that perfect penmanship was nothing special! Lots of layers of information embedded here, with rich juxtapositions both content wise and formally; I really love the push and pull between pasted down bits of printed text and the hand-written lettering running underneath. With a pasted newspaper image of a log cabin flying a Harrison Tyler flag dating it I believe to 1839-40. I've not come across another like this.
7 3/4" x 6 1/2". Covers (great graphics on the front cover) and first page detached, rest of pages pages are string bound. 19 leafs, filled front and back, with a couple of pages of unfettered penmanship (including a lovely full page of "Workmanship") at the end.
