Not sure what this was once a part of, but I think it's pretty good just as it, such that it might serve as the backdrop for a little nativity scene or Christmas village or, my preference, flock of carved animals, and 'tis the season! Nice construction of the rail, too, with cutout niches in the bottom piece into which the cross bars neatly fit, and standing up sturdy and stable on its own.
14 5/8" l x 7 1/2" t x 7/8" d and in very good structural condition. It looks like the gold paint was painted (maybe not too long ago) over an older grayish green, which is exposed on lower flat of the rail.
