To my eye and sensibilities, this is a gloriously beautiful thing, and among the most special textiles I've had in my possession. It is an 18th century crewelwork embroidery, wool on linen, which I believe was originally a purse. (At the end of photos is a photo of a 1986 page from Maine Antiques Digest documenting a similar crewelwork purse believed to have been owned by John Richardson of Townsend MA--sold along with a small watercolor of a house for $9900.) Papers accompanying this document its condition and conservation in 1973, including washing, stabilizing/reinforcing, and reframing; that report will be included. Photos give a decent sense but the indigo blue is richer and more beautiful in hand, with the manner of the stitching making it feel almost like waves--a tremendous sense of movement and energy and vitality to this, which feels both very naive and very elegant at the same time. And wonderful to be able to see the reverse side too. I will be very very happy to keep this one, completely my sort of thing.
Framed, floating between two panes of glass: 11 1/4" x 11 1/4". Textile itself approx 9" x 8 3/4". Conserved in the 1970s, with report of condition and work completely accompanying it and including in photos.
