This came from a small collection of hair locks and wreaths dating to the 1860s--all stitched to, or tucked into, bits of paper annotated with names and notes. I considered listing them as a collection, but realized much of what I find beautiful about these is their specificity and singularity (color, composition, etc.) and so have treated them as individual drawings of sorts--and so, truly, what a beautiful drawing! Two hair samples here, the lower one finely braided before looping and wrapping and securing with a couple of stitches, annotated Sarah R (?) Drake just below it. The one above, near black, feeling wilder and harder to pin down, is annotated W.H. Drake.
4 7/16" x 3 1/2" paper size. Lovely, stable, antique condition, with hair very well secured. Some scattered toning spots on the paper, all of a piece with it, not at all detracting.
