Among my very favorites of late, purchased from a favorite dealer and friend in Maine who is an endless source of things I love, and as tender feeling quilt as I can imagine, I believe made for a child (considerably larger than a crib quilt, but not full sized.) And who wouldn't feel safe and loved tucked in surrounded by those marvelous hearts on all sides?! The blue of the squares behind those carefully hand-cut white hearts (each just slightly different than the next)is the best blue in the world, like the starry skies of Italian frescoes! Between the fabrics and the "M" embroidered on the reverse side, I believe this likely dates to the 1880s-90s. Clearly it was well used, and feels soft in all ways for it, all to the good in my opinion. This is one I would be very inclined to hang to enjoy in full all of the time, feeling to me almost like a complement/counterpoint to an American flag in its soft red white and blue palette, this one standing for love and tenderness.
44" x 42". Well used, with general wear, fading/softening to the color, and small losses to the red fabric here and there. The wear feels very all over and of a piece with it, to me just enhancing what it is. Stable and not fragile.
