Oh goodness, this is an old one, with one half of the ark's roof open and only six animals in the flock, but what fantastic ones they, and it, are! I'm more or less certain the set is 19th century German, and while I'm eyeing these old Noah's arks all the time I've never seen one a set with animals as good as these, made of three carved layers of wood, joined together with irregularly spaced, beautifully bleeding hand-forged nails, and individually hand-painted, such that each really has its own distinct personality. More old nails hold the old ark together, which is much aged but still retaining some of its glorious lapis blue paint. Super.
The ark measures 9 1/2" long x 3 1/2" wide x 4 1/2" tall. Animals range from 2 1/4" to 3" long; 1 1/2" to 2 1/8" tall; and about 5/8" thick. All show plenty of age but are in overall good structural shape and to my eye just perfect. One side of one yellow animal (the one with the beak) is loose and will come off if you try, but just stick it back on the nails and it holds on fine.
