Excellent Antique Modernist (Very Froebel-esque) Handmade Wooden Boxed Cube Puzzle

Regular price $110.00

I've found that the more times I shop Brimfield, the more I've become inclined to almost exclusively purchase little things that will easily fit in my bag (I seem to have gotten quite lazy about heavy schlepping)--and particularly small things delivering unexpected delights that are easily overlooked by others who are moving faster across the fields. Like this handmade boxed puzzle cube--which evinces both Froebel's kindergarten "Gifts" of boxed blocks and also a three dimensional Mondrian painting in its construction (and it should come as no great surprise that Mondrian's mother was a kindergarten teacher!) Very modernist in its modularity, but also very handmade and hands-on; feels almost like a prototype and also like a bridge between the 19th and 20th centuries. I really love this, which can be arranged in a few different ways to make the cube, but which requires some brain power/trial and error!

Box measures 3" x 3" x 2 7/8". Hook on exterior of box latches tight. All in good antique condition, with general surface wear; I have not touched the wood (never do) and think it is perfect as found, but one could apply a bit of oil to brighten it all up a little if desired.
