Edward Loring Horn, Maine, 1870 Folk Art Watercolor of Eagle, Flags, Ship

Regular price $175.00

An eagle with arrows in one talon and olive branch in the other; a stars and stripes shield; six cross flags; a beautiful big clipper ship; and a banner announcing  the name of its maker and date of its making--what more could one want??? Maybe stars shining overhead and wonderfully green and red painting seas! Oh, and then there is the reverse, showing that this was a page of a school notebook: a math problem relating the ages of the first four presidents, some other math, and fabulous little watercolored vines, flowers, and green house. Really a wonderful, special thing, and a great piece of Americana. I haven't turned up much about Edward Loring Horn yet, but have found lots of notable Lorings and Horns in Maine and New England.

9 3/4" x 7 15/16". There is an old fold line down the center, now softened; small tears/losses to three corners, a small tear/loss at center of right edge, and a few very small holes at lower left. Age toning on the reverse side. Otherwise very good condition, not especially brittle or fragile, great color, very readable, and just great.
