I paid close to what I'm asking on this one, which is sometimes the case--there are things I just need to become the steward of for a bit. How to resist these tiny tiny dogs? Or that tiny yellow bird atop its tiny tree? I could not. The scale of it makes me think of love tokens and early handmade rewards of merit, and indeed this is stitched to a paper backing, which looks to me to bear simply the word "Dear" in ink. That's what I see, anyway. Silk thread on ground, c. 1820s or so I believe. Tiny tiny stitches, special feeling thing.
4" x 2 1/2". Some fading and toning certainly, and some minor fraying to the silk around the edges, but it is stable and not especially fragile, very well tethered to the paper.
