This to me very much has the ethereal and otherworldly qualities of a daguerreotype of a painted portrait, though it is a miniature watercolor, unmediated by a camera. Such a fantastic intensity achieved through the most delicate means--barely there but completely present, and with the deep blue of the eyes cast to one side making it seem that this child is witnessing something quite phenomenal. Mid 19th c. I believe, better in person, and to my sensibilities, quite a gem.
Case measures 3 1/8 x 3 5/8”. Graphite and watercolor on paper, under glass. Very good condition, with minor stains/toning, not detracting.
