Daniel Buckler (b. 1945) , Voudon Felicite, Mixed Media on Paper Painting

Regular price $160.00

I knew nothing about Daniel Buckler when I purchased this and a second piece by him at Brimfield-- I just found them beautiful paintings that surprised and rather disarmed me, feeling as if having magically emerged from the ether, just right. I've since learned that he's a known artist, with a fair bit of work out there, though I must say no paintings I like as much as the two I bought. From what I've learned he was born in England in 1945, attended the Royal Academy of Art, worked as a professional soccer player, actor and model among other things, then moved to the US in 1974, living first in NYC and later in New Hope, PA and in New Jersey, where he kept a large studio in the basement of a large Victorian home. And, apparently, he sold work to David Bowie and Pier Paolo Pasolini, among others.

This painting, which looks to be the final outcome of many layers of drawing and painting, is signed on the back not once but twice and titled Voudon Felicite, Leogane, Haiti--translating to Vodou joy, or Vodou blessed, with the term Felicite I believe also used to reference saints.

14" x 9 7/8" and in very good condition, all the better in hand, very striking and graphic but also with a very rich play of color and surface and nuance and depth. c. 1970s-80s I believe.
