I found this one close to home in Rowley MA--and said upon spotting it, as I say again now, it's really quite a thing! 1950s or so I believe, it is a carver's folk art creation in the form of a large sewing chair (a sewing rocker, specifically!) with four posts on each side of the "arm rests" for holding spools, and another four to either side of the drawer below, which itself opens to provide space for all sorts of sewing notions. Fancy detailing to the front and side of the drawer too, and then these six carved heads, each different but all with sparking eyes staring straight ahead, the top pair looking like watchmen to me and the ones on the arms a bit like sphinx! Clearly the maker of this was having a lot of fun, I'd guess making it as a love token of sorts for a sweetheart--one part useful object, one part throne for a sewing queen! (Perhaps appreciation for perpetually mending his socks.)
16 1/2" t x 9 3/4" w x 13 1/2" d. Very good, very clean condition. sound and fairly sturdy, varnished surface, with the seat of the chair the only part showing a little light surface wear.
